The Texas Department of Transportation is actively engaged in preparations for the arrival of Hurricane Gustav along the Gulf Coast, with potential impact for Texas.

Sunday the Houston District completed work to open a third lane of capacity on I-10 westbound at the San Jacinto River to better accommodate the flow of traffic through the construction zone.

TxDOT is using its dynamic message signs to convey important information about travel conditions. In anticipation of the storm, drivers in the Houston, Galveston, Beaumont, Coastal Bend and Corpus Christi regions are being urged to keep their gas tanks filled.

Union Pacific, Kansas City Southern and BNSF Railroads have been contacted to request they minimize blockage of highway rail crossings in the southeast Texas region (including Houston, Beaumont and north to Nacogdoches) with the potential increase in evacuation traffic.

Highway rest areas have been prepared to accommodate the expected heavy influx of travelers/evacuees along I-45 corridor and east.

TxDOT also is providing support to state evacuation operations for evacuating special-needs individuals in southeast Texas.

All coastal TxDOT districts and support districts are standing by with materials ready and personnel on standby. TxDOT staff and resources will be deployed as needed to respond to the storm. TxDOT is actively participating in activities at the State
Operations Center in Austin.

TxDOT's Emergency Operations Centers in Austin (headquarters) and Houston, Beaumont, and Lufkin districts now operating on a 24-hour basis.
