TS Edouard moves ashore near High IslandPosted Tuesday, August 5, 2008
![]() At 7 a.m. today, Tropical Storm Edouard was making landfall near High Island, about 120 miles east of our area. We remain under a tropical storm warning, and a hurricane watch, and authorities warn of the possibility of heavy rainfall and possible tornadoes as the storm drives inland. The tropical storm warning, meaning tropical storm conditions are expected, remains in effect from Grand Isle, LA, west to Sargent. A hurricane watch, meaning those conditions are possible, is in effect from Intracoastal City, LA, west to Sargent. ![]() At 7 a.m. the center of Edouard was located near Lat. 29.6 N. and Long. 94.2 W., on the upper Texas coast about halfway between High Island and Sabine Pass, in the McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge. The storm is moving west-northwest near 14 MPH, and is expected to keep that motion over the next day or two, as it drives inland. Its maximum sustained winds are near 65 MPH, and it is expected to begin to weaken as it moves over land. Tropical storm force winds extend outward from the center up to 70 miles. An Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft reported minimum central pressure of 997 MB. Our area could still see heavy rainfall from the storm as it moves ashore. Rainfalls of up to 3 to 5 inches are expected, with isolated amounts of up to 10 inches possible. Isolated tornadoes also are possible across southeastern Texas today. City and county offices are closed today, and solid waste and recycling pickup will be delayed from Tuesday to Wednesday. Brazosport College is closed until 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, and all campus-based activities at AISD are cancelled this morning. |
