The City of Huntsville has activated an animal shelter to accommodate the pets and livestock of people evacuating from Hurricane Gustav. The temporary animal shelter is located at Sam Houston State University Indoor Arena, Interstate 45 at Avenue M, Huntsville, Texas.

Owners are encouraged to bring water, feed buckets and be prepared to care for their animals daily. People will not be allowed to shelter with the animals but may shelter at another location in the area.

The shelter is prepared to accept large animals, livestock, domestic pets and small animals. Pet owners are reminded to bring their animal's medical records and any medications for their pets; this includes any special food or dietary requirements. All pets should wear current identification.

For more information contact the Huntsville Emergency Operations Center at 936-435-2400 or contact the Texas AgriLIFE Extension Service at 979-845-6800.

For people sheltering in place during the storm, pet owners should be prepared to bring their pets indoors. Keep them in a safe, interior room. Make sure all pets wear current identification.

Livestock owners should make sure their pastures are clear of debris and anything that could become airborne in high winds. Livestock should be left loose in pastures not enclosed in a building.
