County will see no ‘super precincts’ in November

Although "super voting precincts" will be considered in the future, they will not be in effect for the November 2008 General Election.

Brazoria County Clerk Joyce Hudman told Commissioners Court that the five hearings held by her office in various parts of the county indicated about a 50-50 split in the number of people favoring and opposing the idea.

The "super precincts" would allow county citizens to cast their ballots at any voting precinct in the county, regardless of their place of residence, and would reduce the number of voting precincts from the present 71 to about 40.

Hudman said that although she had worried that no one would show up for the hearings, they had both a good turnout and good response.

In general, persons who worked at elections favored the idea of super precincts, though not for this November's election because of the expected heavy turnout, and the general public generally opposed the idea, she said.

She indicated that her office will seek approval from the state to try the super precincts in the future.

Several other persons spoke briefly on the super precinct idea. Former Democratic Party Chair Kay Mudd said that she appreciated Hudman's withdrawing the idea of instituting the change for the November election, because the expected heavy voting then would make it the wrong time for changes.
