20-month-old Rylee Church, the granddaughter of Angleton council member Bonnie Church (far right), steals the show from the combined forces of Angleton and Brazoria County officials as they joined to announce the first Heart of Christmas celebration.

The City of Angleton announced Wednesday that, in cooperation with Brazoria County, the first Heart of Christmas celebration has been scheduled Friday, December 5, on the courthouse lawn. Scheduled activities include a lighted parade, pictures with Santa, kids games, entertainment, a movie on the lawn and lots of fun activities, all at no cost, to the community.

“We felt that after all our community has been through in the last few months, that we needed to do something to bring everyone together to celebrate not only our community but all that the season represents,” said Mayor J. Patrick Henry. “We know how much we have to be grateful for and what a wonderful opportunity to come together and celebrate.”

“We also wanted to do something for the community without any commercialization to it – something very simple that allows friends and neighbors to spend the evening together,” said Henry.

The Heart of Christmas celebration will replace the city’s Christmas on the Square, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce until that organization announced in July it was dropping the event.

Details are still being worked out but the city is asking the community for their help. “We would love to have school and church groups come out and entertain and participate in the parade,” said City Manager Greg Smith.

“We are also inviting all types of groups – churches, businesses and civic groups – to set up a booth and give things away, whether it is hot chocolate or cookies or something with their businesses logo on it. Our only request is that no one sell anything – we want this to be the type of event people can bring their whole family out and not cost anything,” Smith said.

The lighted parade will kick off the evening beginning at 6 p.m. near the gazebo and work its way up Velasco, down to Cedar and then end on Chenango near the starting area. Once the parade ends, Santa will begin the festivities when he “turns on” the Christmas lights. People will then have various activities to choose from including pictures with Santa, hayrides, kids games, a movie on the courthouse lawn and live entertainment throughout the area.

As details are finalized, registration forms for the parade, entertainment and booth spaces will be added to the city website at www.angleton.tx.us. For more information, contact City Hall at 979-849-4364.
