Reps visit AISD campusPosted Monday, September 1, 2008
![]() State Rep. Rob Eissler speaks to AISD employees about education in the state of Texas. ![]() Like most school districts, Angleton ISD started its new school year with work days, in-services and motivational speeches to help prepare its faculty and staff for what lies ahead. However, AISD had some special guests at its opening convocation last week. Chairman of the House Committee on Public Education, Representative Rob Eissler (R-The Woodlands), spoke to the faculty and staff about the importance of educators and about the excellent reputation of Angleton ISD. “When I asked Representative Eissler to speak, he was more than happy to visit one of the top school districts in Texas,” Superintendent Heath Burns said. “Mr. Eissler is well aware of how great Angleton ISD is. The House Committee on Public Education has attained much research about the most successful school districts in Texas, and Angleton ISD consistently ranks at the top of all the studies.” Representative Dennis Bonnen (R–Angleton) was also present at the event to praise his alma mater and to introduce Eissler. “Chairman Eissler sought me out on the House floor last session to share with me Angleton ISD's distinction of being one of the highest ranking districts in the state with respect to achievement and fiscal responsibility,” Bonnen said. “I was honored that he traveled to Angleton to personally share this news with an auditorium filled with the people who earned that ranking. Chairman Eissler's commitment to the education of Texas students was evident to all of us in attendance. I was proud to welcome my friend and colleague to witness the results of AISD's hard work and dedication.” ![]() Representatives Rob Eissler and Dennis Bonnen help Superintendent Heath Burns and various members of the AISD Board of Trustees present the Early Childhood Campus principal Annette Jones and teacher Ginger Newton Taylor with a "Recognized" banner. In addition to speaking, Eissler and Bonnen helped Burns and several members of the AISD Board of Trustees award campuses banners for their previous year’s performance on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills. ![]() “It was an honor having Representatives Eissler and Bonnen help us celebrate the success of the previous school year,” Burns said. “They also got a first-hand view of what it is that makes AISD such a great school district—the amazing AISD employees.” Burns added that he believed the faculty and staff benefited from Eissler’s and Bonnen’s contributions. “It is important for educators to see who their lawmakers are and to hear what they have to say about education in the state of Texas,” he said. “They are educators’ voices in the legislature and are the individuals who can help change education.” Eissler was elected to represent District 15 as State Representative in November 2002, and in 2007 Governor Perry appointed him to the Education Commission of the States where he represents Texas as one of seven Commissioners. As Chairman of the House Public Education Committee, Eissler commissioned a study on the overall performance and operating efficiencies of the 200 largest public school districts in Texas, and Angleton ISD ranked #1. Bonnen, a graduate of Angleton High School, serves as representative of the 25th Legislative District in Texas and has so since 1996. He serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Environmental Regulation as well as Chairman of the Select Committee on Electrical Generation Capacity and Environmental Effects. ![]() |
