The three Brazoria County delegates and alternates to the Republican National Convention were, from left, Anita Bargas, delegate, Angleton; Sandy Golden, delegate, Alvin; Chris Harvey, alternate, Pearland.

Local businesswoman and Brazoria County delegate to the Republican National Convention Anita Bargas achieved a new measure of fame Sept. 4 when she was quoted on the front page of the New York Times.

The story, headlined “Palin Assails Critics and Electrifies Party,” contained the following paragraph:

Delegates said they were enthralled by Ms. Palin. "I think she’s great; she’s giving it back to the Democrats for all the sorry things they’ve said about her and about America," said Anita Bargas, a delegate from Angleton, Tex. "She’s a conservative, and she has a great sense of humor."

The piece was accompanied by a photo of Bargas, along with Sandy Golden, a delegate from Alvin and Chris Harvey, an alternate from Pearland.

E-mails about the Times flew fast and furious among Bargas’ friends here. “I’m a celeb,” she joked. Unfortunately, Bargas’ fame was fleeting, and was quickly eclipsed here by news of Hurricane Ike’s approach, landfall and aftermath.
