BC honor society receives award

Brazosport College is pleased to announce that the Psi Psi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society recently received a special commendation during the Texas Regional Convention.

The PTK chapter at Brazosport College fulfilled all requirements to the distinction of being named a “5 Star Chapter.”

To be recognized as a “5 Star Chapter” the chapter must meet certain standards at each level, one through five.
Level five is the most difficult to attain as the students put in a lot of hard work with projects, attend national and international conventions, and meet the scholarship, leadership, fellowship, and service requirements.

“It is so great for the students involved in PTK to be recognized for their dedication to the program,” said Heidi Nicolini, past co-sponsor for Phi Theta Kappa.

This program serves as a blueprint for developing a strong chapter. It is designed to assist chapters in better organizing their projects and initiatives starting with the basic elements of running a chapter in “Level One” to becoming competitive in Phi Theta Kappa programming in “Level Five.”

“The students work very hard for this status. It is not an easy task,” said Jo Greathouse, Instructor of Psychology and Phi Theta Kappa sponsor.

In addition to receiving regional recognition for this award, Brazosport College will also receive international recognition on the Phi Theta Kappa website.

Along with receiving recognition for becoming a “Five Star Chapter,” Brazosport College was a recipient for the Pinnacle Award.

The Pinnacle Award recognizes Phi Theta Kappa chapters and regions for successfully enhancing their recruitment and orientation strategies, as measured by the number of new members reported to Headquarters in a given year.

“We were able to increase our program numbers by 10 percent this past year,” said Greathouse.

For students to be eligible for induction into Phi Theta Kappa, they must have a 3.5 grade point average and maintain at least a 3.0 to stay in the honor society.
