Brazosport College staff members Jeff Detrick and Kim Blackwell were recently honored by the college’s students, faculty and staff members as recipients of National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence awards. Blackwell, a Brazosport College helpdesk specialist, was selected for NISOD’s staff excellence award, while Detrick, an associate professor of mathematics, was the recipient of the organization’s teacher excellence award. As excellence award recipients, Detrick and Blackwell will be attending NISOD’s International Conference on Teaching & Leadership Excellence on May 30 through June 2 in Austin. ![]() “This is a great honor and I truly appreciate the recognition,” Detrick said. “It’s very rewarding to help make a difference in the lives of my students.” Detrick has been teaching full time at Brazosport College since 1999 and has earned the opportunity to be both instructor and administrator. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Humboldt State University in California in 1995, followed by a Masters of Science degree from the same school in 1998. For Blackwell, the NISOD is an indication that she makes a difference for the college staff. “I’m really excited about this award,” Blackwell said. “It shows that I have a positive impact on the staff and students here at Brazosport College.” Blackwell, a Brazosport College graduate, began working as a helpdesk specialist in the Information Technology department in 2005. She has earned two degrees from Brazosport College, the first in 2002 and more recently, in 2009. ![]() Interestingly enough, Blackwell was one of Detrick’s math students in 2001. Since 1978, NISOD has been dedicated to the professional development of faculty, administrators and staff, as well as the continued improvement of teaching and learning, with the ultimate goal being student success. More than 700 community colleges around the world are members of NISON, including a majority of urban and technical colleges in the United States and Canada. ![]() The goals of NISOD’s International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence are to celebrate excellence and to provide a unique professional development opportunity for community college and university faculty, staff and administrators to foster student success.
