Reader recalls "The Pizza Preacher"Posted Monday, April 2, 2007
I've been wanting to write you, Micheal, to tell you about one of the interim ministers we had before Pastor Weatherly came. He retired before ministers were very successful at negotiating a retirement fund, and he needed to make more money than he could preaching an occasional sermon for a church who was either between pastors or had one gone for some reason, so he became a pizza delivery man. Now some of his colleagues thought this was a real step down, but he explained that he loved it and why. He met so many people, and when they found out he was the "Pizza Preacher," if they thought he had a little time, they'd pour their hearts out to him. Sometimes he would deliver a pizza to a home where Mom and Dad were too busy to be at home at dinner time, and he'd give the kids a word of reassurance. Any way, it became a second ministry to him, and he felt it was as rewarding as his first ministry. Now I know you're not a minister, but you are a lover of people, and I'm guessing this job will be a way to pass on and receive good will. Maybe you'll be writing your book some day about being the pizza delivery man. Thank you, friends, Juanita and John Henry |
