Reader dissatisfied with Perry

As a republican I am extremely dissatisfied with the job performance and the priorities (or lack thereof) (Texas Gov. Rick) Perry has exhibited. Going back to earlier in the session and the debacle of the HPV vaccine and now slashing funding for community colleges has made my opinion of Perry plummet.

I am a mom of two girls, 11 and 9, and a college student, so this legislative session has hit me where I live. Perry seems to live at 1010 Colorado in a vacuum. His callous disregard for the future of Texas makes me pause and may make me rethink my political positions: not because I believe Perry to be the only representation of the Republican party, but the average Republican politician.

Sadly my party has become a party that does not support personal choice and growth, otherwise, they would support education more and infringe on my rights as a parent less. In the case of the HPV vaccine my party stood up, but the reasons for their actions were more of a pissing contest than standing up for me as a mother and a woman. Bonnen seemed to want to stand up for me, but representation like that seems to be on the decline. The Perrys of the world seem on the rise: politicians that play politics while amassing and hoarding more and more power while they cut the people off at the knees.

The socio-economic makeup of this country is stagnant, and community colleges promote mobility in a political and sociological climate that (would) rather keep people in their place. Shame on Perry for proving to be that “blockhead” stereotypical version of a republican that democrats have made us out to be for years. Perry has missed an opportunity to be a beacon for education, a “point of light” that predecessors in our party have called us to be. Compassionate kindness has fallen to the wayside and greed once again reigns upon the hill.
