Summer Reading Club starts June 9Posted Monday, May 26, 2008
![]() The Public Library’s Summer Reading Club kicks off June 9 at all Brazoria County Library facilities. The theme for this year is “Texas Reading Club Jubilee: 1958-2008,” celebrating 50 years of the Texas Summer Reading Club. It is easy to join. Simply visit any public library, pick up a reading log and start reading. Summer Reading is open to all children ages 0 to 18. They sign up to read at least 10 books or four hours, and can read from any source—books, magazines, Websites, etc.—or can listen to books on CD or tape. They can also listen to books read to them by an adult, librarian, teacher, friend, or sibling. Participants may count books or time from the day the program begins – even if they register at a later date. ![]() Children can register at one library branch only. The Summer Reading Club has lots of special programs for young people and families throughout the summer. Calendars of these events are at each branch or on the website. http://bcls.lib.tx.us. Summer Reading Club is just one of the many ways parents can help fight “summer learning lag,” since summer reading helps to exercise children’s brains. The phrase refers to the period of time between school sessions, when children’s cognitive development slows due to the lack of academic instruction. The best part is that all the programs are free.
