The Brazosport Art League announces the monthly “Saturday Art Special” to be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. February 13. Instructor Sheila Conner will be making mandalas.

If you are looking for something fun filled, informative, and educational, then this is the class for you. Conner says,”I’m going to discuss mandalas in nature and in various cultures, as well as the archetypal mandalas symbols used for soul work. We will be making mandalas using various materials, so bring whatever you have.

"Most of the time, I use colored pencils and markers, but I’ve also used watercolors, acrylics, and pastels. Students will be encouraged to collage a mandala if they choose, so various magazines and collage materials can be brought. There will be some art supplies available, but they are encouraged to bring whatever they like to work with, even just pen and ink, if they like. It’s really a matter of personal choice.

"Most of my mandalas are on Bristol, although I’m working on one on wc paper. It’s best to have heavy paper—that way no worry if they use paint or markers. I will furnish Bristol, too, at a fee. I like to make them at least the size of a dinner plate—just easier to work with. I’ll furnish paper plates to use as templates. Pens, markers—especially the “brush-tipped” ones work really well. If they want to paint them, brushes, but to be honest, probably pens and markers or colored pencils are best. There’s something peaceful about working in the rhythmic motion of a marker or pencil. But I won’t be picky, I’ve done them all. Collage ones are fun, too, so glue sticks, magazines, scissors, etc."

If you attended the General Membership meeting in January, then you got a taste of what this class will be. Conner gave a brief demo on “The Art of Mandalas” at that meeting.

The SAS will be held in the BAL studio at The Center for the Arts & Sciences, 400 College Dr., Clute. Fee for the class is $15. for BAL members, non members $25. You may join at this time if you wish.

You may bring a sack lunch, Coffee and tea will be provided, drink machines are on premises.
