Nuclear Power Program offered at BCPosted Monday, April 7, 2008
![]() Instruction for the three Nuclear Power Technology classes will eventually take place in the future Byron and Sandra Sadler Health Professions and Science Technology Complex. Discussing the facility needs of the program are pictured Dean Ken Tasa and Regent Lillian Lockett, M.D. Brazosport College, in cooperation with South Texas Project (STP) Nuclear Operating Company, has developed an innovative Nuclear Power Technology Enhanced Skills Certificate program to begin this Fall, 2008. The program will prepare students for well-paid apprentice positions as plant operators and electrical, mechanical, chemical, health physics, or I&C technicians at STP. ![]() The South Texas Project Electric Generating Station is one of the newest and largest nuclear power plants in the country. Students who have an Associates Degree in Chemical Process Technology will now have the opportunity to take the three courses in the Nuclear Power Technology Enhanced Skills Certificate that are designed to adapt their process technology skills to the nuclear power industry. The three courses are: Nuclear Fundamentals I, Nuclear Fundamentals II, and Nuclear Power Plant Organization and Processes. STP will have the need to hire hundreds of entry level employees over the next few years, due to retirements at the current plants and their intention to build and operate two new nuclear units at the nuclear power station site. They expect to bring the two new units online in 2014 and 2015. STP has an Educational Incentive Program to help students earn that certificate by providing tuition, fee, and book costs for select students, as well as the possibility of paid internships and summer co-op positions at the plant.
