Name That Street: Exhibit shows history of area street namesPosted Monday, May 26, 2008
![]() The Brazoria County Historical Museum has opened a new exhibit entitled “NAME THAT STREET: Brazoria County Street Names, Everyday Reminders of History.” The Exhibit will run through October 3, 2008. Names such as Gordon, Dumble, De Zavala and Shanks are more than street names. They represent people and families who left a mark on history and are remembered through the streets which bear their name. It is impossible to exhibit information on every street in the County named after a person or family; however, there is information available on many of these people in the Adriance Research Library, located on the second floor of the Museum. Not every community in Brazoria County chose to name streets for people; some elected to use species of trees, letters of the alphabet or numbers. ![]() Located in the 1897 Brazoria County Courthouse at 100 East Cedar Street in Angleton, the Museum is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is closed Sundays and holidays. The Museum houses five exhibit spaces, an auditorium for programming, the Museum bookstore and the Adriance Research Library. Admission is free. For more information, call 979/864-1208 or visit the Museum’s website at www.bchm.org. ![]() |
