Alaskan ‘Fiddling Poet’ at BC Oct. 7-8 Free jazz concert Oct. 10 at Clarion BAL Saturday Art Special Oct. 11 ![]() ’10 Questions for the Dalai Lama’ Oct. 23 On Thursday, Oct. 23, The Clarion at Brazosport College presents Rick Ray’s “10 Questions for the Dalai Lama, a film” depicting Ray’s journey to the monastery and 45-minute audience with the Dalai Lama. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. Ray will present opening remarks and lead a discussion immediately following the film. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and children. Museum hosts community altar The Brazoria County Historical Museum will host a community altar in celebration of the annual Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, on November 2, 2008. If you want to honor a family member or friend at the altar, bring a few small, personal items to the Brazoria County Historical Museum between October 20 and 31. The Museum will be open for special hours on Sunday, November 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. for anyone who wants to visit the altar. Personal items then can be picked up between November 3 and 6. For more information, call the Brazoria County Historical Museum at 979-864-1208 or email programs@bchm.org. ![]() Get to know solar system at Planetarium September shows at the Brazosport Planetarium, 400 College Boulevard, Clute, will be “Knowing the Solar System” — Scientists worldwide point telescopes and send probes into space, making new discoveries all the time. Explore the new discoveries in our vast Solar System. Shows are at 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Oct. 7. Admission is free to members; $4 for adults, and $3 to students. The Planetarium Gift Shop & Lobby are open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and during all Planetarium shows. For more information, call 979-265-3376. Free gift with donation to soldiers Each box shipped to service personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan by Military Moms and Wives of Brazoria County costs $10.95. A Family Flower Shop and Keepsakes, 1999 E. Mulberry, is helping collect the shipping funds by offering customers a free gift with each donation of $10.95 made to MMWofBC. Computer workshops offered in Pearland A series of free computer skills mini-workshops, "(A)cess (I)nformation (M)asterfully @ Pearland Library", will be presented at the Pearland Library, a branch of the Brazoria County Library System, each month during the fall season, September-November. Classes will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Program offered at Camp Mohawk A special program scheduled at 1 p.m. on Dec. 3 will provide an opportunity for pre-registered individuals to walk through the park with Rangers to collect hidden treasures, such as natural pinecones, acorns, leaves, twigs, and more. Those participating will then design and make their own wreath to take home. All necessary supplies will be provided, but those who wish may bring other items to add to their wreath. ![]() American Legion Spaghetti Lunch American Legion Post 241 holds a spaghetti lunch every third Thursday of the month from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. A $6.00 donation is requseted and homeade desserts are available for $1.00 each. County Cavalry unveils new website The Brazoria County Cavalry has a new website, with information about the organization and how to join, as well as rockers and patches to buy, and a photo gallery that includes photos from the group’s Dec. 22 gathering, at www.brazoriacountycavalry.org. First Wednesdays in Danbury The Danbury “Are You Okay” program, is overseen and supervised by the Danbury Police Department and offered free to residents in the DISD. Volunteers meet at 4:30 p.m.on the first Wednesday of each month in the the Danbury Community Center. The first step in living with chronic respiratory disease means educating yourself on lung disease. Join us to learn tips and techniques to better manage your disease. The Better Breathers’ Club, the newest support group at Angleton Danbury Medical Center, meets at 2 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month in the ADMC classroom, 132 Hospital Drive, with facilitator Jeff Haynes RRT, Director of Cardiopulmonary Medicine. Community Partners of Brazoria County Is your club, council, or Sunday School Class looking for a long term community project? Community Partners of Brazoria County, a volunteer- based program for the Brazoria County Alliance for Children, is seeking volunteers. CPBC provides emergency needs for CPS children and families. Our mission to help these 500+ children generates a variety of volunteer opportunities. Do you like to sort and organize? The Donations Warehouse is in need of you or your group's skills! Do you like to shop for gifts or wrap them? Then the Birthday Club is for you! Other opportunities are available as well. The Angleton Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association meets at 6 p.m. on the first Monday of each month at the Angleton Police Department. ![]() Community Food Pantry needs volunteers If you’re looking for a way to give back to the community, consider applying for the position of volunteer manager of the Community Food Pantry at 216 W. Murray in Angleton. The pantry needs someone to coordinate pantry volunteers and food donations, keep records, file grant applications, and generally keep the pantry running efficiently. It is sponsored by Mental Health Educational Initiative, a non–profit organization founded by two local mental health experts, Drs. Rakesh and Saundra Jain. Mental Aerobics is an educational group promoting mental fitness for residents of Brazoria County and is offered at no charge. Participants receive at no charge a Mental Aerobics workbook written by both Dr. Jains. The series of seminars offers direction in achieving your mental fitness goals. The meetings are informational and educational in nature focusing specifically on depression and bipolar disorder. The Museum is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is closed Sundays and holidays. The Museum houses five exhibit spaces, an auditorium for programming, the Museum gift shop and a research library. Admission is free. The Brazosport Museum of Natural Science, home to the largest collection of shells on display in the South, a life–size dinosaur replica, exhibits of wildlife, rocks & minerals, archaeology, fossils, and a hands–on children’s area, is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Frequent new additions to the collections are on display. Open to the public. American Legion Post 241 hosts a dance on the first and third Fridays of every month. They feature “Lowell and Debbie,” a large dance floor and a no-smoking atmosphere. The dance starts at 8 p.m. and goes until midnight. The post is located at 1021 South Velasco (288 Business) in Angleton. The Angleton Danbury Medical Center Auxiliary is accepting applications for new members. If you are interested in becoming a part of this active and growing organization, come by the Frank W. The Brazosport Art League gallery exhibits at the Center for the Arts & Sciences, 400 College Boulevard, Clute, change every 5–6 weeks. Center Gallery hours are Tuesday–Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. The Thelma Martin Members’ Gallery displays original works for sale by League members. Admission is free to all galleries. The Art Shop sells original artwork, cards, stationary, miniature paintings, ceramics, jewelry, silk scarves, other small gift items and Fun Art packets for children.
