![]() ![]() Jazz singer Diane Schuur. Season tickets are now available for the 2008-2009 Clarion Performances. The new Clarion Performances season features three series of events, a Celebrity Series, a Concert Artist Series, and an International Filmmakers Series. The Celebrity Series features country music superstar Lee Greenwood, the legendary bandleader/trumpeter, Doc Severinsen, Grammy Award winner, Melissa Manchester, and the iconic folk singer, Judy Collins. ![]() The Concert Artist Series features legendary jazz singer, Diane Schuur, the world famous Harlem Gospel Choir, the award winning vocal ensemble, Anonymous 4, and classical music superstars, The Five Browns. The International Filmmaker Series features three globally focused films, lectures, and discussion hosted in person by the filmmaker. The three films are Rick Rays’ “10 Questions for the Dalai Lama”, Dave Bank’s “Virtue of Risk,” and Turk Pipkin’s “Nobelity.” Purchasers of the Celebrity Series season tickets or the Concert Artist Series season tickets will receive a 10 percent discount off the purchase price. Patrons purchasing both Series will receive a 15 percent discount. Patrons also have the option of creating their own series with “Pick Your Own Series” “Pick Your Own Series” allows patrons to select any four events from the Celebrity Series and the Concert Artist Series and still receive a 10 percent discount of the purchase price. ![]() The Clarion is Brazosport College’s beautiful, state-of-the-art concert hall located on the main campus at 500 College Drive in Lake Jackson. More about the Celebrity Series Brazosport College celebrates its 40th anniversary in September with Grammy Award winner and multi-platinum entertainer Lee Greenwood. Greenwood is one of the most acclaimed artists of our time. He is often identified as the ultimate name that comes to mind when patriotism is mentioned in the entertainment industry. Greenwood gained his success the old-fashioned way: he earned it, one rung up the ladder at a time. After years of struggling to gain recognition in the music industry, one song - “God Bless the USA” - in 1983 singularly transported Lee Greenwood far beyond the ranks of stardom to a niche in America’s pop culture that is seemingly reserved for him and him alone. The legendary band leader for “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,” trumpeter Doc Severinsen has been a crowd favorite on television and the concert scene for decades. In 2006, Doc moved to Mexico and teamed up with guitarist Gil Gutierrez and violinist Pedro Cartas to form El Ritmo de la Vida. A unique combination of classical Spanish melodies with a jazz flair features gorgeous Latin ballads and great movie music. This performance is nothing short of electrifying! Doc Serverinsen and El Ritmo do la Vida appear at the Clarion on November 7, 2008 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $55 adults, $50 Brazosport College employees, $45 for students and children. Celebrate the Holiday Season with Grammy-award winner Melissa Manchester as she delights audiences with rendition of classic Christmas carols as well as her greatest hits, including “Whenever I Call You Friend,” “Don’t Cry Out Loud,” “Lovers After All,” and “Midnight Blue.” Manchester’s albums and her work with Bette Midler, Paul Simon and Kenny Loggins have served to establish her as one of the most compelling singer-songwriters in contemporary music. Through the years, she has had her songs recorded and performed by such artists as Diana Ross, Sarah Vaughn, Johnny Mathis, Kenny Loggins, The Captain and Tenille, Mel Torme and Barbra Streisand. Come celebrates the holidays with Melissa Manchester on December 19, 2008 at 7:30pm. Judy Collins has thrilled audiences worldwide with her unique blend of interpretative folksongs and contemporary themes. She’s known for the stunning purity of her lovely soprano voice and for her varied recordings, which have included folk, show tunes, pop and rock & roll. Judy’s had hits with songs by Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, Stephan Sondheim and Joni Mitchell. Her version of “Amazing Grace” was a huge popular success, “Both Sides Now” and “Send in the Clowns” garnered her the coveted Grammy Award. Her newest CD is “Judy Collins Sings Lennon-McCartney”. More about the Concert Artist Series Diane Schuur and the Brazosport Jazz Orchestra perform on January 24, 2009 at 7:30pm. Diane Schuur is a legend in her own right. Winner of two Grammy Awards for “Best Jazz Vocalist,” as well as headliner for many of the world’s most prestigious music venues, Diane’s interpretive powers and her legendary three-and-a-half octave vocal range have earned her critical acclaim worldwide. Joining her on stage is our own Brazosport Jazz Orchestra. Come experience jazz like never before! Tickets are $35 adult, $30 Brazosport College employees, and $5 students and children. The world famous Harlem Gospel Choir appears at the Clarion on February 8, 2009 at 4:00pm. The Harlem Gospel Choir is the most famous gospel choir in America and a pre-eminent gospel choir world-wide. It travels the globe, sharing its joy of faith through its music, & raising funds for children's charities. The Choir was founded in 1986 by Allen Bailey, who got the idea for the Choir while attending a celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Cotton Club in Harlem. The Choir presents the finest singers & musicians from Harlem's Black Churches & the New York/tri-state area. Tickets for the Harlem Gospel Choir are $25 adult, $20 Brazosport College employees, and $5 students and children. Anonymous 4 is a must for anyone that came to the Chanticleer performance last season. Renowned for their unearthly vocal blend and virtuosic ensemble singing, the four women of Anonymous 4 combine musical, literary, and historical scholarship with contemporary performance intuition as they create ingeniously designed programs, interweaving music with poetry and narrative. The ensemble has appeared on numerous radio and television programs, including Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion," "CBS Sunday Morning," A&E's "Breakfast with the Arts," and NPR's "Weekend Edition." Anonymous 4's award-winning recordings have attained unprecedented popularity, rising to the top of Billboard's classical chart, and selling almost 1.5 million copies worldwide. The New York Post described the 5 Browns as "One family, five pianos and 50 fingers add up to the biggest classical music sensation in years." The 5 Browns are a youthful, all-American quintet of brothers and sisters, each a virtuoso concert pianist, The 5 Browns are sweeping the classical world through their dream of waking up classical music and introducing it to the widest, largest, and most excited audience they can find. The 5 Browns have been seen on NBC's "Today Show," "Oprah," "60 Minutes," "Good Morning America" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." In addition to enjoying the #1 spot on the Billboard classical charts for 20 straight weeks, The 5 Browns were named among the top two classical artists for all of 2005 and 2006. Tickets for The 5 Browns are $35 adult, $30 Brazosport College employees, and $5 students and children. ![]() More about the International Filmmaker Series On the eve of United Nations Day, The Clarion presents a film and discussion about one of the most controversial and central figures in the global debate about human rights, the Dalai Lama. “10 Questions for the Dalai Lama” depicts a journey filmmaker Ray made to the monastery of the Dalai Lama where he was allowed a 45 minute audience with the holiest man in the Buddhist faith. Rick was told that the Dalai Lama tires easily of questions that bore him or that he has heard many times before. Rick`s soul searching to find 10 provocative questions, and the experiences revealed on this journey are woven into a contemporary look at the struggles of the Tibetan people, their relationship with China, and the amazing history behind the Dalai Lamas of Tibet. Screening of “10 Questions for the Dalai Lama” followed by a discussion with Rick Ray will be held at the Clarion on October 23, 2008 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and children. Three-time Emmy-winning photojournalist and documentarian Dave Banks presents his lecture and film entitled “Virtue of Risk” at The Clarion on January 15, 2009 at 7:30pm. Dave Banks has spent 30 years in the field chronicling the human condition. From trekking across the Sahara Desert, hanging off cliffs in Australia and being hunted by the Turkish Army, Dave has encountered numerous risks in his illustrious career. Despite his worldwide experiences, perhaps his biggest risk was to simply believe in himself. Told by teachers that his dyslexia would haunt him forever and profoundly diminish his professional opportunities, Dave found solace in an old Ansco box camera given to him by his grandmother. With an endless energy and a positive spirit that has served him well all over the globe, Dave delivers a passionate presentation complete with video clips, photographs and an engaging question and answer exchange that is sure to illustrate what can be accomplished by making the decision to believe in yourself. Tickets for Dave Banks “Virtue of Risk” are $10 for adults and $5 for students and children. On the eve of Earth Day, The Clarion presents Turk Pipkin’’s “Nobelity,” a look at the world's most pressing problems through the eyes of Nobel laureates. “Nobelity” follows filmmaker Turk Pipkin's personal journey to find answers about the kind of world his children and grandchildren will know. Filmed across the U.S., and in France, England, India and Africa, “Nobelity” combines the insights of nine distinguished Nobelists with a first-person view of world problems and the children who are most affected by them. The laureates of “Nobelity” include Desmond Tutu, Wangari Maathai, Jody Williams, Sir Joseph Rotblat and many others. The film’s Washington D.C. opening night premier was a memorial tribute screening celebrating the life and work of Sir Joseph Rotblat. Having dedicating 50 years of his life to the battle against nuclear proliferation - a mission that was left to him by Albert Einstein - Joseph Rotblat passed away in August, 2005, just a few months after filming a cautionary interview with Turk Pipkin on the increasing dangers of nuclear proliferation. Screening of “Nobelity” followed by a discussion with Turk Pipkin will be held at the Clarion on April 21, 2009 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and children. |
